A Royal Hunting Ground

The fortress of Montmeilleur was first raised in the 11th century, commanding the glacial valley of the Trièves beneath the escarpments of the Vercors. While governing the Dauphiné as the young Dauphin Louis, the future King Louis XI chose Montmeilleur as his preferred hunting residence in 1460 — before he was even crowned King of France.

The forests teemed with red deer and wild boar. Six centuries later, that tradition endures.
