Know Before You Go

Do Not Land After Recent Rain
If precipitation has occurred within the prior 24 hours, the grass strip will be soft. Landings will cause damage to the surface and are not permitted. If conditions are uncertain, contact Mr. Cosson on +33 6 85 96 93 46 before departing. Some French will be helpful.
Aircraft Parking
Tarmac parking is by reservation, for staying guests only. Quick turnarounds — under ten minutes — by visiting pilots may use the tarmac for brief stops. For longer turnarounds and unreserved parking, the grass area north of the airstrip may be used without reservation. Park brakes on, chocks on wheels (available in the hangar); note your arrival and departure in the hangar mailbox list.
Mountain Flying Experience
The French Pilote de Montagne licence is not required — Montmeilleur is a private airfield, not an altisurface. This is, however, a mountain runway with a 10% slope. A check-out with a mountain instructor is not essential, but is suggested for first-time visitors or pilots unfamiliar with sloped grass strips.
Radio & Frequencies
Marseille Info: 124.5 MHz (lost below ~8,000 ft).
Mountain frequency: 123.065 MHz — broadcast position and intentions every ~10 minutes after leaving cruise altitude.
AA (auto-information) is mandatory within 5 NM — confirm the current frequency from the airfield chart or AIP before flight.

Approach & Landing — QFU 09

  • Enter the traffic pattern mid-field at 4,000 ft QNH
  • Right-hand downwind south of the airfield, 270° heading just north of Le Ménil
  • From the west: aim slightly right of the château — strip marked with red-white-red riders and a striped windsock
  • Expect healthy downdrafts on short final — maintain energy accordingly
  • Most light GA aircraft will land naturally in the first third of the strip (~180m from threshold). The 10% downslope provides ample deceleration — no need to chase the threshold
  • Consider 1,500 RPM on the prop during rotation for a smoother flare
  • Reduce power over all villages — avoid overflying habitations
  • Regional and national parks nearby — consult ICAO charts for overfly restrictions

Departure — QFU 27: Maintain runway heading for 2 km (to the first low rise) before any turns. Reduce take-off power as soon as feasible. AA mandatory. Lyon AIS: +33 4 72 22 56 76 / 78.

Fuel: No AVGAS/JET on site. LFLG Grenoble, LFNA Gap, occasional LFNJ Aspres. MOGAS at Mens, 3 km.
